John Bolton says Trump-Modi personal bond has faded amid tariff tensions
PTC Web Desk: Former US National Security Advisor John Bolton has claimed that the once-strong personal rapport between US President Donald Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has largely disappeared. His remarks come as trade tensions rise following Trump’s recent decision to impose a 50 per cent tariff on Indian goods.
In an interview with British outlet LBC, Bolton said, “Trump had a very good personal relationship with Modi. I think that’s gone now, and it’s a lesson to everybody.” He suggested that leaders, including UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, should not rely too heavily on personal ties with Trump, as they cannot guarantee protection from difficult policy decisions.
Bolton argued that Trump tends to view global diplomacy mainly through personal relationships. “If he thinks he has a good relationship with Vladimir Putin, then he assumes the US has a good relationship with Russia. But that’s not how international relations work,” he explained.
The comments highlight a shift from the highly publicised Trump-Modi camaraderie, which once featured in headline-making events like the “Howdy Modi” rally in Houston and state visits. Bolton said the celebrated partnership may no longer carry the same weight.
Bolton, who served in the Trump administration between 2018 and 2019, has frequently criticised the US President’s foreign policy approach. He further cautioned world leaders that while Trump may value personal connections, they are unlikely to shield them from unpredictable or tough decisions.
