Mexico bus crash: Death toll rises to 29, several injured
Mexico bus crash: A passenger bus in southern Mexico plunged into a 75-foot-deep gully, killing at least 29 passengers and injuring 20 others. The accident took place in the indigenous Mixteca region of Oaxaca state.
The crash killed 27 people, including a 1-1/2-year-old infant, according to Jes Romero, the state's interior secretary. Meanwhile, over 20 people were hurt in the crash, some critically.
His office later verified that the death toll had risen to 29, as two people died in a hospital.
According to Romero, the bus driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle and plunged into the ditch. "It appears that a lack of skill and tiredness caused the accident," Romero told a local television station.

The police released photographs of a tragic sight in which the bus had toppled, smashing the passenger compartment completely. The bus was travelling from Mexico City to isolated mountain settlements in Mexico's impoverished Mixteca area.
The belongings, bundles, and baskets left among the ruins suggested that the dead were most likely people who worked in manual labour in the capital and were returning to their hometowns.
The fatal accident follows others that have occurred on winding, mountainous roads in rural areas of Mexico. When a bus crashed off a cliff in western Mexico in April, 18 people were killed and many were injured.
