Nepal's interim PM Sushila Karki appoints three ministers for caretaker Cabinet

PTC Web Desk: Nepal’s political landscape witnessed a historic moment as Sushila Karki, 73, took office as the country’s first female Prime Minister on Sunday. A day after assuming the role, Karki expanded her newly formed caretaker cabinet by appointing three ministers, who were sworn in on Monday by President Ramchandra Paudel at the President’s Office, Sheetal Niwas, Maharajgunj.

Rameshwor Khanal, a former finance secretary, was appointed as the new Finance Minister. Kulman Ghising, who earlier served as the managing director of the Nepal Electricity Authority, took charge of three critical ministries — Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation; Physical Infrastructure and Transport; and Urban Development. Advocate Om Prakash Aryal was sworn in as the Minister for Home Affairs as well as Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs.

Following the oath-taking ceremony, the newly appointed ministers immediately assumed charge of their respective offices.

Sushila Karki, who served earlier as Nepal’s Chief Justice, was appointed Prime Minister on September 12 at the recommendation of the ‘Gen Z’ movement, which has been leading widespread protests against former PM KP Sharma Oli’s administration. She is heading a caretaker government tasked with conducting fresh national elections scheduled for March 5, 2026.

Her appointment came after Oli resigned last week amid nationwide unrest over a controversial social media ban and corruption allegations. The protests turned violent, with hundreds storming the Prime Minister’s Office, ultimately leading to Oli’s resignation. At least 72 people were killed during the clashes.
