Pakistan slams Rajnath Singh’s call for IAEA oversight on nuclear arsenal, calls remarks 'irresponsible'

PTC Web Desk: Pakistan has strongly criticised Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh's recent remarks advocating for International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) oversight of Pakistan's nuclear arsenal. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Islamabad called Rajnath Singh’s comments a demonstration of "sheer ignorance" regarding the global nuclear watchdog’s role and mandate.

In a sharply worded statement issued on Thursday, Pakistan said it “strongly condemns” the Indian minister’s remarks, describing them as “irresponsible” and a reflection of India’s “profound insecurity” over Pakistan’s strategic deterrence.

“These remarks expose Rajnath Singh’s frustration over Pakistan’s conventional military capabilities, which are sufficient to deter Indian aggression without relying on the kind of nuclear brinkmanship India often accuses others of,” the foreign ministry asserted.

What did Rajnath Singh say?

During his first visit to Jammu after the success of Operation Sindoor, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh reviewed frontline security operations and addressed Indian soldiers at Srinagar’s Badami Bagh Cantonment.

“Pakistan has shown time and again how recklessly it behaves. From here, in Srinagar, I question whether such an irresponsible and rogue nation should be trusted with nuclear weapons. I believe Pakistan’s nuclear arsenal should be brought under IAEA supervision,” he stated, pointing to growing concerns about regional security.

He also commended the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and praised the armed forces and local citizens for their role in counter-terrorism efforts, stating that Jammu and Kashmir had demonstrated clear resistance to terrorism and Pakistani interference.

IAEA's position

While the International Atomic Energy Agency has not issued a direct response to Rajnath Singh’s suggestion, it clarified to news agency ANI that there has been no radiation leak or release from any nuclear facility in Pakistan. The IAEA remains focused on its mandate of promoting the safe and peaceful use of nuclear technology.

About the IAEA

The International Atomic Energy Agency serves as the global authority for nuclear cooperation and oversight. Its mission includes ensuring the safe, secure, and peaceful application of nuclear science and technology. The agency contributes to global peace and security, and supports the achievement of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.
