PM Modi in Maldives for key diplomatic visit; what is on agenda?
PTC Web Desk: Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Malé, Maldives, on Friday for a two-day official visit, where he was warmly welcomed by Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu. President Muizzu, who took office in November 2023, was joined by top ministers, including those in charge of foreign affairs, defence, finance, and homeland security.
Upon his arrival, PM Modi was greeted with a traditional dance performance by local children, setting the tone for high-level discussions. According to Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, this marks the first state visit by a foreign head of government that President Muizzu has hosted since assuming office.
The visit comes at a time of renewed diplomatic efforts between New Delhi and Malé, following a period of strained relations under President Muizzu’s administration. During the visit, Modi is expected to be the guest of honour at the Maldives' Independence Day celebrations on July 26. He is also scheduled to inaugurate several India-funded development projects aimed at boosting bilateral ties.
In a statement before departing, PM Modi highlighted the significance of the visit, saying, “This year marks the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and the Maldives. I look forward to advancing our joint vision for a Comprehensive Economic and Maritime Security Partnership, furthering cooperation for peace and prosperity in the Indian Ocean Region.”
Modi’s visit to the Maldives follows a successful two-day trip to the United Kingdom, where India and the UK signed a major trade agreement to remove tariffs on key goods, including cars, textiles, and whisky, strengthening bilateral trade relations.
