PM Modi urges SCO to combat terrorism, emphasises united efforts

New Delhi, July 4: Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the virtual summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) on Tuesday, highlighting the significant challenges faced by countries worldwide, such as food, fuel, and fertilizer crises, amidst controversies, tensions, and epidemics. In his opening remarks, PM Modi stressed the need for united efforts to address these issues effectively.

PM Modi expressed concern over certain countries employing cross-border terrorism as a tool of their policy and emphasised that the SCO should not hesitate to criticise such actions. With Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in attendance, PM Modi called for decisive action against terrorism.


The SCO summit witnessed the participation of Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and other leaders from SCO nations.

PM Modi underlined that terrorism poses a threat to regional and global peace, urging for enhanced mutual cooperation in countering terror financing. He emphasised the importance of collective action against terrorism in all its forms and manifestations.

Regarding Afghanistan, PM Modi stated that India's concerns and expectations align with those of most SCO countries. He emphasised that the SCO has emerged as a pivotal platform for fostering peace, prosperity, and development in Eurasia. PM Modi highlighted the deep cultural and people-to-people ties that India shares with the Eurasian region, spanning thousands of years.

As the chair of the SCO, India has consistently strived to elevate the multifaceted cooperation within the organisation to new heights, PM Modi remarked. He expressed India's support for the proposal to reform and modernize the SCO, further strengthening its effectiveness and impact. PM Modi also welcomed Iran's upcoming membership in the SCO family.

The virtual summit concluded with discussions on various other important regional and global issues, reflecting the SCO's commitment to promoting cooperation and stability among its member nations.
