Qatar accepts ex-Indian Navy men’s appeal against death sentence in 'espionage' case
New Delhi, November 24: In a positive development, a Qatar court has accepted India's appeal against the death penalty imposed on eight former Indian Navy personnel last month in an alleged espionage case. The officers, including Commander Purnendu Tiwari, Commander Sugunakar Pakala, Commander Amit Nagpal, Commander Sanjeev Gupta, Captain Navtej Singh Gill, Captain Birendra Kumar Verma, Captain Saurabh Vasisht, and Sailor Ragesh Gopakumar, were arrested in August 2022.
The Qatari court will now proceed to set a hearing date after examining the appeal. Notably, all these Navy veterans, with distinguished service records of up to 20 years, held significant positions, including instructional roles within the Indian Navy. This decision brings relief to the individuals involved and underscores the diplomatic efforts between India and Qatar in addressing this sensitive matter.
