PTC News Desk: In a press statement on Monday, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar expressed deep apprehension regarding the escalating threats faced by maritime commercial traffic in the Indian Ocean. Highlighting the direct impact on India's energy and economic interests, Jaishankar underscored the seriousness of the situation.

Addressing the international community, Jaishankar labeled the attacks on ships in the proximity of India as a "grave concern." He emphasised that these threats not only jeopardise the safety of maritime commercial traffic but also have direct implications for India's crucial energy and economic pursuits. Jaishankar stressed that the current scenario, marked by a surge in maritime threats, is detrimental to all parties involved and needs urgent attention.

Referring to the targeting of merchant vessels in the Red Sea, a vital trade route, particularly amid the Israel-Hamas conflict and actions by Iranian-backed Yemen's Houthi rebels, Jaishankar urged a swift resolution to the issue. The minister pointed out that the international community must recognise the severity of the situation and act promptly to address it.

During his visit to Tehran as part of ongoing high-level exchanges between India and Iran, Jaishankar conveyed the shared concerns of both nations regarding recent events in West Asia. He emphasised the mutual interest in preventing further escalation of violence and hostilities in the region, signaling the importance of collaborative efforts to maintain stability.
