Thailand school shooting: A student allegedly opened fire at a school in Thailand on Friday, killing at least seven persons, including himself, and injuring 15 others in one of the country's deadliest school shootings in recent years.

The attack took place at Debsirin Nonthaburi School in Nonthaburi province, located on the northwestern outskirts of Bangkok. Authorities confirmed that the suspected shooter was a student of the school.

Gunman among those killed

National Police spokesperson Lt Col  Trirong Phophan said seven persons, including the suspected shooter, lost their lives in the attack. He added that 15 persons sustained injuries and were rushed to hospitals for treatment.

Thailand's Education Minister Prasert Jantararuangtong confirmed that both teachers and students were among those killed in the shooting.

Students describe moments of panic

Students fled the campus as gunfire echoed through the school, while ambulances and emergency responders rushed to the scene. One 18-year-old student said he initially mistook the loud sounds for firecrackers. "I didn't think it was gunfire at first. There were repeated shots, then silence and then the firing started again," the student recalled.

Photographs from the scene showed injured victims being taken to ambulances as teachers embraced each other in shock and grief.

Emergency workers recount rescue efforts

Emergency responder Kiatikhun Verapongpradith said his team arrived while the shooting was still underway. According to him, several students had suffered gunshot wounds to their backs, chests and arms.

Rescuers also found a male teacher dead inside the school building. A female teacher with severe injuries to her chest and arm was given CPR for nearly 30 minutes before being rushed to hospital, but rescuers were unable to revive her.

Second school shooting in Thailand this year

The incident marks the second school shooting reported in Thailand in 2026. Earlier this year, a teacher was killed and a student injured after a gunman opened fire at a school in Hat Yai in southern Thailand. 

Deputy Education Minister Akkharanan Kannakittinan said officials are coordinating efforts to provide assistance to victims and their families.

Thailand continues to face concerns over gun violence

Thailand has one of the highest levels of civilian gun ownership in Southeast Asia. An estimated 10 million firearms are believed to be in circulation across the country, roughly equal to one firearm for every seven residents. The latest school shooting comes months after another gun attack at a school in Hat Yai district in southern Thailand, where a teacher was killed and a student was injured.
