Trump gains ground for potential rematch with Biden following super Tuesday victories

PTC News Desk: Donald Trump is edging closer to securing the Republican presidential nomination, with his victories on Super Tuesday propelling him forward as the frontrunner. Concurrently, President Joe Biden is anticipated to accumulate more delegates on the Democratic side, maintaining his position as the party's nominee.

Super Tuesday stands out as a pivotal moment in the 2024 White House race, marking the day when the majority of states cast their votes in the presidential primary calendar. On March 5, voters across 16 U.S. states and one territory participated in the primary process, with President Biden and his Republican counterpart, Donald Trump, barreling towards a potential rematch in the upcoming general election. Amidst this backdrop, Nikki Haley, Trump's sole remaining rival, grappled with sustaining her campaign, which increasingly appeared untenable.

The Associated Press reported that while Super Tuesday constituted the apex of the primary campaign, comprehensive results were expected to materialize over the course of several additional hours. Nominating contests unfolded across a broad spectrum of states, including Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, and the U.S. territory of American Samoa.

SUPER TUESDAY PRIMARY: THE LATEST

  1. President Joe Biden dominates the Democratic contests on Super Tuesday, securing victories in Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and Vermont, as reported by the Associated Press.

  2. Republican frontrunner Donald Trump emerges victorious in the Republican primaries in Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia, according to the Associated Press. Trump's focus on this pivotal day is to push his rival, Nikki Haley, out of the race and position himself for a rematch against Democratic President Joe Biden. Trump has emphasized his hardline stance on immigration, pledging to execute the largest deportation effort in U.S. history if elected.

  3. Delegates, party officials allocated to top candidates based on contest outcomes, play a crucial role in nominating the presidential candidates. On Super Tuesday, approximately one-third of the total delegates, comprising 865 Republican and at least 1,420 Democratic delegates, are at stake.

  4. The Trump campaign anticipates securing at least 773 delegates on Super Tuesday, propelling him closer to clinching the nomination in March. Currently holding an estimated 244 delegates, Trump's Republican rival, Nikki Haley, trails with 43 delegates. The threshold to win the Republican nomination stands at a minimum of 1,215 delegates, while Democrats need at least 1,968 delegates.

  5. President Joe Biden is poised to secure the Democratic nomination, despite nominal challenges from Congressman Dean Phillips and author Marianne Williamson. Biden faced a setback in Michigan on February 27 when a notable portion of voters opted for an "uncommitted" ballot, citing concerns over the President's stance on Israel.

With a significant lead in the polls, Donald Trump aims to solidify his position as the Republican frontrunner and potentially eliminate Nikki Haley from the race. Despite Haley's persistence and limited wins in previous nominating votes, her campaign faces financial challenges with donors retracting support. Super Tuesday represents a critical juncture for Haley to disrupt Trump's momentum or unveil his electoral vulnerabilities ahead of the general election.
