Trump warns France with 200 % tariffs over refusal to join Gaza 'Board of Peace'
PTC News Desk: US President Donald Trump has said he would slap a 200 per cent tariff on French wines and champagnes, claiming the move would pressure French President Emmanuel Macron to join his proposed “Board of Peace” initiative aimed at resolving global conflicts.
Responding to a reporter’s question about Macron’s reported refusal to join the board, Trump remarked, “Did he say that? Well, nobody wants him because he will be out of office very soon.”
“I’ll impose a 200 per cent tariff on his wines and champagnes, and he’ll join — though he doesn’t have to,” Trump added.
A source close to Macron said on Monday that France currently plans to decline the invitation to join the initiative.
Trump first floated the idea of setting up the Board of Peace last September while outlining his plan to end the war in Gaza. However, invitations sent to world leaders last week describe a broader mandate focused on ending conflicts worldwide. According to a draft charter seen by Reuters, around 60 countries were invited, with members required to contribute $1 billion in cash for their membership to extend beyond three years.
The proposal has drawn cautious reactions from governments, with diplomats warning that it could undermine the role of the United Nations.
Trump also said on Monday that Russian President Vladimir Putin had been invited to join the peace board. “He’s been invited,” Trump said.
