US Senate passes resolution to halt Iran war in rebuke to Donald Trump

PTC News Desk: The US Senate on Tuesday approved a resolution asking President Donald Trump to stop US military involvement in Iran, marking a rare challenge to the president from Congress.

The resolution was passed by a vote of 50-48 after it had already been approved by the House of Representatives earlier this month. The move reflects growing concern among lawmakers, including some Republicans, about the conflict with Iran that began on February 28.

This is the first time both the Senate and the House have passed a measure under the 1973 War Powers Act directing a president to withdraw US armed forces from an ongoing conflict.

Although the resolution is largely symbolic and may not immediately change US policy, it is seen as a political setback for Trump, who has generally enjoyed strong support from Republican lawmakers. In the Senate, four Republicans joined nearly all Democrats in supporting the measure, while two Republican senators did not vote.

It remains unclear whether the resolution will have any impact on the conflict, especially as the Trump administration continues efforts to negotiate a peace deal with Iran.

Under the War Powers Act, the resolution does not require the president’s signature. However, the White House argues that the measure is unconstitutional and therefore not legally binding.

Legal experts say the issue remains disputed and could eventually be decided by the courts. The House passed the resolution by a vote of 215-208, with four Republicans joining all Democrats in support.
