Who is Arun Subramanian ? Indian-origin US Judge who sentenced Sean 'Diddy' Combs for four years

PTC News Desk: Indian-American Judge Arun Subramanian – the first South Asian appointed to Manhattan’s federal bench – is known for being calm, fair, and precise in his rulings. In a recent case involving Sean "Diddy" Combs, he explained that the 50-month prison sentence was based only on the crimes Combs was convicted of. He further cited that his history of sexual and physical violence as justification for a 'substantial sentence'. 


Who is Arun Subramanian?

Born in 1979 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to Indian immigrant parents. His father was a control systems engineer, and his mother worked as a bookkeeper. He studied at Case Western Reserve University and earned his law degree from Columbia Law School in 2004.

Subramanian began his career by clerking for senior judges, including US Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

Later, he joined the New York law firm Susman Godfrey LLP in 2007, became a partner, and worked there until 2023. He helped win over $1 billion for clients, represented victims of child pornography trafficking, and worked on consumer rights cases.

He has also dedicated time to pro bono work, handling public interest cases and serving on the pro bono panel of the US Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.

The Diddy Case

According to The New York Times, Judge Subramanian stressed that the sentence was meant to show that violence and exploitation against women have serious consequences. With time already served, Combs will remain in prison for 36 more months, pay a $500,000 fine, and face five years of supervised release.

While acknowledging Combs as a famous and influential artist, the judge underlined his record of sexual and physical violence as the reason for imposing a strong punishment, People reported.
