1984 sikh Genocide case : court awards capital punishment for one, life imprisonment for the other Thirty-four years after the 1984 Sikh Massacre in which more than 3000 Sikhs lost their lives and many others sustained life-threatening injuries, Delhi court, on Tuesday  sentenced death punishment to one while court sentenced life imprisonment to other for killing two persons and injuring three others in south Delhi’s Mahipalpur during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. Delhi court sentenced death punishment to Yashpal Singh whereas it announced life imprisonment to Naresh Sehrawat.The two convicted men — Naresh Sehrawat and Yashpal Singh — allegedly followed the instructions of a Congress leader. The verdict was  pronounced in Tihar Jail due to security concerns and attack on convict in Delhi court premises. 1984 sikh riotsThe charges beside that of murder were under Indian Penal Code (IPC) Sections, 452 (house break for hurt), 307 (attempt to murder), 324 (voluntarily causing hurt with dangerous weapons) and 394 (dacoity). 1984 sikh riots The two men who lost their lives in the anti-Sikh riot on November 1, 1984, were Hardev Singh, who was then 24 years old, and Avtar Singh, 26. Special Investigation Team (SIT) and Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Parbandhak Commitee (DSGPC) advocates had asked for the punishment of death sentence.Delhi police had closed the case in 1994 for want of evidence. However, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) on the riots had reopened the case in 2015. - PTC News
