Ahead of UP Assembly elections 2022, BJP Cabinet minister joins Samajwadi Party
In a major jolt to the BJP in Uttar Pradesh ahead of the Assembly elections 2022, Cabinet minister Swami Prasad Maurya resigned from office on Tuesday and joined the Samajwadi Party. Notably, even before his letter emerged, Swami Prasad Maurya met former UP CM Akhilesh Yadav and joined the Samajwadi Party. He was Minister of Labour, Employment and Coordination. Also read | Amid Covid surge, Jaipur Literature Festival postponed In his resignation, Swami Prasad Maurya said he had resigned from the post and quit the BJP allegedly due to ignorant attitude of the government towards Dalits, backward classes, unemployed youth, labourers and small-scale traders. "Despite a divergent ideology, I worked with dedication in the Yogi Adityanath Cabinet. But because of the grave oppression of Dalits, OBCs, farmers, unemployed and small businessmen, I am resigning," Swami Prasad Maurya wrote in the resignation letter. Maurya's daughter Sanghamitra is also a BJP MP from Uttar Pradesh. Soon after Swami Prasad Maurya's resignation, Samajwadi Party leader and former UP CM Akhilesh Yadav shared a photo with the former UP minister on Twitter saying, "Warm welcome and greetings to the popular leader Swami Prasad Maurya ji and other leaders, workers in the party who fought for social justice and equality! There will be a revolution for social justice, there will be change."
Notably, the 2022 Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh will be held in seven phases starting from February 7. The counting of votes will take place on March 10.
