Delhi: 18-year-old athlete allegedly commits suicide at JLN stadium

An 18-year-old athlete allegedly committed suicide at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Delhi on Tuesday. The deceased, Palender Chaudhary, was found hanging from a ceiling fan in his hostel room. He was a sprinter who had represented India at the international level.

A friend of Palender first saw him hanging from his room’s ceiling when he came to meet him on Tuesday. He raised an alarm soon after. Few guards and his coach took him to the stadium medical centre. He was rushed to SJ Hospital, where he was declared brought dead on Wednesday morning.

Palender was practising and living in the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium for two months. He had represented India in 100 and 200 m race in the Youth Asia Athletic meet in 2017.

Sports Authority of India told the media sources that the sprinter had a heated argument with his father on phone on Tuesday morning. Later his sister came to talk to him. His father, Mahesh Pal, arrived at the hospital from Aligarh on Wednesday morning. His father revealed that his son demanded money and he assured him that he will give him money. No suicide note was found during the police investigation.
