Coronavirus: SC issues notice to Centre, Delhi govt on plea for rehabilitation, vaccination of beggars

The Supreme Court on Tuesday sought the responses of the Centre and the Delhi government on a plea seeking rehabilitation and COVID-19 vaccination of beggars in view of the coronavirus pandemic.

The top court was not of opinion that no beggars should be allowed on the streets as it was a socio-economic problem. It asked the Solicitor General Tushar Mehta to assist it in the matter.

A Supreme Court bench of justices D Y Chandrachud and M R Shah said that people were compelled to beg on the streets to eke out some elementary livelihood due to lack of education and employment.

The bench stated that it would not want to take an elitist view that no beggars should be there on the streets.

Likewise, the apex court issued notices to the Centre and the Delhi government, seeking their responses within two weeks on the petition for rehabilitation of beggars and vagabonds, their COVID-19 vaccination.

It also sought responses for providing them with shelter and food amid the coronavirus pandemic.
