Covid-19: Delhi LG rejects proposal to lift weekend curfew

Delhi Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal on Friday rejected the Arvind Kejriwal-led Delhi government’s proposal to lift weekend curfew in the national capital and ease restrictions.

However, Delhi LG Anil Baijal has allowed the private offices to reopen with 50 percent capacity. He said that the restrictions in Delhi needed to remain in place till the Covid-19 situation improves.

The LG House stated: "Agreed to 50% attendance in Pvt offices. But suggested that status quo be maintained with regards to weekend curfew and opening of markets and decision be taken on the subject once the Covid situation improves further."

In the proposal, Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal had asked to withdraw the weekend curfew remove the odd-even system in the markets and allow private offices to operate at 50 percent capacity.

Earlier in the month, the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) has decided to impose a curfew in Delhi on Saturdays and Sundays to curb the Covid-19 surge.

As many as 12,306 new Covid-19 cases were recorded in the past 24 hours in Delhi on Thursday with a test positivity rate of 21.48 percent.
