Covid scare in Patiala: Over 100 students in RGNUL test positive

Patiala, May 5: As many as 122 students of the Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law in Punjab’s Patiala have tested positive for Covid-19, informed authorities on Thursday.

The uptick in Covid-19 infections on the campus has prompted the authorities to declare the RGNLU a containment zone. Though students show mild to no symptoms of severe illness, the university authorities have been instructed to follow strict Covid-19 behaviour. Covid-19 positive students have been kept isolated in separate blocks.

Meanwhile, the Patiala district administration has directed the authorities to get hostels vacated by May 10.

The university authorities have also postponed the offline term exams till further notice, adding that they will release the date sheet after taking stock of the situation.

On Wednesday, the health officials rushed to the RGNLU campus to assess the Covid situation. After reviewing the situation, an official informed that the number of cases is expected to increase as several farewell parties were organised on the campus without following the safety protocols.

The Patiala Deputy, Sakshi Sawhney, has said that the university has been instructed to follow standard operating procedures and to keep constant liaison with parents.

The number of Covid cases is on a steady rise in the country. India logged 3,275 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours, the Union Health Ministry informed on Thursday.

With this, the active cases in the country now stand at 19,719, constituting 0.05 per cent of India's total COVID positive cases. The Ministry, in a press release, informed that the weekly positivity rate in the country currently stands at 0.78 per cent, while the daily positivity rate is at 0.77 per cent.

As many as 55 deaths from the virus were also reported in the last 24 hours.
