Guwahati-Ledo Intercity Express hits elephant; derails

Guwahati-Ledo Intercity Express hits an elephant on Wednesday morning between Titabar and Mariani stations, following which the front luggage cum parcel van of the express derailed. The elephant died on the spot. There were no reports of casualities.  Senior officials of the Tinsukia division of Northeast Frontier Railways rushed to spot with a relief train.

The incident took place around 4.50 am between Titabar and Mariani stations.

An initial inquiry was conducted during which it was found that the train was within its stipulated speed. A departmental inquiry has been ordered to find out details about adherence to protocols.

In the recent pasts, there has been a manifold increase in elephant crossings. Due to which, trains are slowed down whenever any information on animal movements is shared with the railways.
