CBSE third language policy: In a major update for school education, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has made it compulsory for all affiliated schools to introduce a third language in Class 6 starting from the 2026-27 academic session. The board issued an official circular on April 9, directing schools to treat the instruction as urgent and ensure compliance within seven days.

According to the notice, several schools have already started implementing the third language system. Those that have not yet done so must begin immediately.

The CBSE has clearly stated that teaching should start right away, even if prescribed textbooks are not yet available. Schools can use any suitable local books or study material until official resources are released.

In addition, schools must inform the board about the third language they choose and update the details on the OASIS portal. Regional CBSE offices will keep track of whether schools are following the instructions.

The board has also set a condition for future classes. Only those languages that are introduced in Class 6 will be offered as subject options in Classes 9 and 10. This means schools must carefully decide which language they introduce now.

This decision is based on the recommendations of the National Curriculum Framework for School Education 2023, which promotes multilingual learning.

Under this system, students will study three languages:

First language (usually mother tongue or regional language)

Second language (English or another Indian language)

Third language (an additional Indian language)

The CBSE said the aim of this move is to improve language skills, encourage cultural understanding and strengthen unity across the country.

The board has once again reminded schools to take all necessary steps for immediate implementation and warned that strict monitoring will be carried out.
