Forensic student Amrita Chauhan who killed her live-in partner in Delhi was disowned by family in July 2024
Accused's parents had publicly disowned her through a newspaper advertisement, a document now submitted in court as part of the case evidence
PTC Web Desk: More than a year before the shocking murder of UPSC aspirant Ramkesh Meena came to light, 21-year-old forensic science student Amrita Chauhan had already been disowned by her family. In July 2024, her parents had publicly disowned her through a newspaper advertisement, a document now submitted in court as part of the case evidence.
This revelation adds a disturbing layer to the brutal killing of Meena, whose charred body was discovered earlier this month in his north Delhi apartment in Gandhi Vihar. What the police first suspected to be a tragic fire accident has since unraveled into a coldly premeditated murder, allegedly plotted by Amrita with the help of her former boyfriend Sumit Kashyap and his friend Sandeep Kumar, both from Moradabad.

Amrita and deceased Meena's relationship deteriorated when she found out that he had recorded her private videos without consent and refused to delete them.
According to the Delhi Police, Amrita had moved in with Meena in May 2024. Their relationship deteriorated when she found out that he had recorded her private videos without consent and refused to delete them. Feeling betrayed and humiliated, she sought help from her ex-boyfriend Sumit, who roped in his friend Sandeep to execute a plan of revenge.
Investigators revealed that on the night of October 5–6, the trio travelled from Moradabad to Delhi. CCTV footage later captured two masked men and a woman entering Meena’s residence around 2.30 am. By 2.57 am, the woman, identified as Amrita, and one of the men were seen leaving. Moments later, a powerful explosion ripped through the apartment, engulfing it in flames.
The subsequent probe revealed that the blast was intentionally set off to conceal the murder. The police said Meena was first strangled, then doused with ghee, oil, and alcohol before the suspects opened the gas cylinder to spark the fire. They even locked the flat from the inside using a makeshift mechanism to simulate an accidental blaze.
What initially looked like an air-conditioner blast soon raised red flags when experts noticed inconsistencies in the burn pattern and surveillance footage. Amrita’s phone location data and call records placed her near the crime scene, leading to her arrest on October 18. During questioning, she allegedly confessed and detailed the plot. The police later arrested Sumit on October 21 and Sandeep on October 23, recovering multiple items linked to the crime, including a hard disk, trolley bag, mobile phones, and the victim’s shirt.
Officials believe Amrita’s obsession with crime thrillers and her academic training emboldened her to commit the act, confident she could outsmart the system.
