Woman dies by suicide 48 days after marriage, family says husband installed CCTV to track her

PTC News Desk: A 26-year-old woman, Vishakha Tilkar, allegedly died by suicide just 48 days after her marriage, with her family accusing her doctor husband and in-laws of subjecting her to persistent physical and emotional abuse.

Vishakha married Nitin Tilkar on April 30 and moved to Ambernath near Mumbai. Her family said relations between the two families were cordial before the wedding, but tensions emerged soon afterward. According to her relatives, her in-laws were dissatisfied with the gifts and the level of respect they received during the marriage ceremonies and allegedly pressured her to bring more money and jewellery from her parental home.

Family members further alleged that Nitin had installed CCTV cameras inside and outside the house to closely monitor Vishakha’s movements, leaving her with little privacy. They claimed she was frequently assaulted for speaking with other people.

According to a relative, Vishakha was subjected to severe beatings whenever she interacted with anyone. He alleged that just two days before her death, she was assaulted for speaking to a female neighbour. The family believes the continued harassment pushed her into despair, ultimately leading her to take her own life.

Her relatives also said Vishakha had informed her mother about the abuse she was enduring. Concerned about her safety, her parents had begun making arrangements to bring her back home. However, before they could do so, they were informed that she had allegedly died by hanging, according to reports.

Following a complaint by the family, police in Ambernath's Shivajinagar area registered a case against Nitin Tilkar, his mother Chhaya Tilkar, and his brother Ninad Tilkar on charges of physical and mental harassment as well as abetment to suicide. Police have arrested Nitin, while efforts are ongoing to locate and apprehend the other two accused.
