IMD heatwave alert: More heatwave days likely in parts of India from April to June

The India Meteorological Department warns of increased heatwave days in parts of India between April and June 2026. Check temperature trends, April forecast and rainfall predictions

Heatwave conditions IMD alert: Some parts of eastern, central and northwestern India, along with areas in the southeastern peninsula, are likely to witness a higher number of heatwave days than usual between April and June, the India Meteorological Department said on Tuesday.

As per the IMD, maximum temperatures across large parts of the country are likely to remain normal or even below normal during this period. However, several regions may experience above-normal daytime temperatures, particularly East and northeast India; Eastern parts of central India and adjoining peninsular regions.

Night temperatures to stay above normal

Minimum temperatures are expected to remain above normal in most parts of India during the three-month period. However, some areas in Maharashtra and Telangana could see normal to slightly below-normal night temperatures.

April outlook: Warmer days in some areas

For April, the weather department said maximum temperatures are likely to be normal to below normal in many parts of the country. At the same time, above-normal temperatures are expected in parts of east and northeast India, as well as some pockets of northwest and southern peninsular India.

Night temperatures during April are also likely to stay above normal in most regions, except a few isolated pockets in the southern peninsula where they may remain normal.

Above-normal rainfall expected

The IMD has predicted that overall rainfall across the country in April 2026 is likely to be above normal. Most regions are expected to receive normal to above-normal rainfall, while parts of northeast India may experience below-normal rainfall.
