PTC Web Desk: English Springer Spaniel named Angus, highly trained for detecting the dangerous hospital superbug C. difficile (Clostridioides difficile), has officially retired after nearly a decade of service at Vancouver General Hospital in Canada.

Angus, at 13 years old, spent around 85% of his life helping patients, using his exceptional sense of smell to identify the presence of the harmful bacteria. C. difficile is a serious infection that can cause severe illness and is notoriously difficult to eliminate, as it can survive routine cleaning and linger on hospital surfaces such as furniture and medical equipment.

Angus played a crucial role in hospital infection control, inspecting thousands of rooms across 32 hospitals in Canada. His work significantly helped in preventing the spread of infections and improving patient safety within healthcare facilities in British Columbia.

To honour his contribution, Angus was given a special retirement celebration on March 29, organised by his trainer Teresa Zurberg. According to Zurberg, although Angus remained highly skilled at his job, his aging body had started to slow down, making it the right time for him to step back.

Post-retirement, Angus will now enjoy a peaceful life in British Columbia, engaging in lighter activities like finding hidden objects and spending time at ease.

Hospital authorities have praised Angus for his outstanding service, and there is growing hope that he will be recognised with a Canadian Service Medal for his remarkable contribution to healthcare.
