Prime Minister Narendra Modi scripts record, becomes longest-serving prime minister; surpasses Nehrus record
The milestone is expected to be celebrated at a major National Democratic Alliance (NDA) meeting in New Delhi, where leaders of the ruling coalition will honour Modi’s achievement and discuss the government's future plans.
PTC News Desk: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday became India’s longest-serving elected Prime Minister in continuous office, completing 4,399 consecutive days and surpassing the record held by India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru.
The milestone is expected to be celebrated at a major National Democratic Alliance (NDA) meeting in New Delhi, where leaders of the ruling coalition will honour Modi’s achievement and discuss the government's future plans. The event at Bharat Mandapam will be attended by chief ministers, deputy chief ministers and senior leaders from all 22 NDA-governed states and Union Territories.
Modi is expected to lead the meeting, which will also be attended by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP president J. P. Nadda and other senior leaders.
The NDA is likely to pass a resolution congratulating Modi on becoming the longest-serving elected Prime Minister to hold office continuously.
Although former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi served in office for more than 14 years in total, her tenure was spread across separate terms. In comparison, Modi has remained in office without interruption since 2014, allowing him to break Nehru’s record for continuous service after India's first general election.
Nehru’s term from 1952 onwards is used for this comparison because he led an interim government before the country's first general elections were held.
