Amritpal Singh likely to be re-arrested as NSA detention ends; Punjab Police reaches Dibrugarh Jail, action expected in Ajnala case. Full details here
Amritpal Singh news: Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh is expected to be re-arrested as his detention under the National Security Act (NSA) ends on April 22. A Punjab Police team has reached Dibrugarh Central Jail in Assam, where Singh is currently lodged. Officials say he will be taken into custody again in connection with the Ajnala police station case and produced in court for remand.
Amritpal Singh was arrested in April 2023 from Moga after being on the run. The case relates to a February 2023 incident in Ajnala, where he and his supporters allegedly entered a police station, broke barricades and clashed with the police to free an associate.
He is among 41 accused in the case, facing charges such as attempt to murder, attack on police personnel, and rioting. The police say he is the main accused and his arrest will help speed up the trial.
Several other cases are also registered against him in different districts of Punjab.
The Punjab Government had earlier asked the Centre to keep Amritpal Singh in Assam and allow court hearings through video conferencing, citing security concerns.
