Convicted officials still in service? High Court questions Punjab Government, imposes fine
PTC Web Desk: The Punjab and Haryana High Court has pulled up the Punjab Government for failing to submit details of tainted and corrupt officials, despite clear directions earlier.
Expressing displeasure, the HC has imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on the state government for not filing its response on time. It has now given a fresh deadline of three weeks to submit a complete list of such officers and employees.
The matter was taken up by a Bench led by the Chief Justice, which took suo motu notice of the issue and sought an explanation from the government.
The court has asked the Chief Secretary of Punjab to provide details of all officials and employees who are facing cases under the Prevention of Corruption Act and the NDPS Act.
During the hearing, the court observed that the issue is serious and concerning. It noted that several government officials against whom criminal cases are registered are still continuing in service. The Bench also pointed out that in some cases, individuals have already been convicted by courts, yet they have not been removed from their posts.
The High Court has now demanded a detailed report not only on such officials but also on senior authorities who recommended their continuation in service despite charges or convictions. The court indicated that action may also be taken against those responsible for allowing such officials to remain in government jobs.
