BSF Jawan dies in NCB custody in Amritsar, Punjab rights panel seeks judicial probe
The organisation has expressed alarming concerns over what it describes “serious case of custodial torture” and grave violation of human rights.
PTC News Desk: A Border Security Officer (BSF) constable allegedly died while in the custody of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB). According to the Amritsar Police, his health suddenly deteriorated during interrogation by the Narcotics Control Bureau in Amritsar.
On this matter, Station House Officer (SHO), Maqboolpura Police Station, Jagjit Singh said, "He was brought in for questioning in connection with a case being investigated by the Narcotics Control Bureau. According to them, his health suddenly deteriorated during the interrogation, leading to his death."
Meanwhile, Punjab Human Rights Organisation has demanded high-level probe into the suspicious death of the BSF constable Jaswinder Singh. The organisation has expressed alarming concerns over what it describes “serious case of custodial torture” and grave violation of human rights.
The PHRO has raised serious questions over the circumstances leading to jawan's arrest and subsequent death. It asserted that Jaswinder was arrested in Jammu and brought to Amritsar for interrogation while his family was kept in the dark about reasons for his arrest.
The family of the deceased has alleged assault by the Narcotics Team and created a ruckus outside the post-mortem house.
The human rights organisation has sought adequate compensation for the victim's family and that his mortal remains be tranported to his native village will full honours.
The PHRO said it would approach the Punjab Human Rights Commission to ensure accountability of the officials concerned. It also warned that if concrete steps are not taken by the government, it would approach national and international human rights bodies.
