Punjab crime: In a chilling case that has shocked Punjab, the police in Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar district have arrested a man accused of murdering his girlfriend’s 15-year-old daughter and allegedly attempting to destroy evidence by burning the body in a forest area.

The case came to light after the victim’s mother, Usha Rani, a resident of Jadla village currently living on Garhshankar Road in Nawanshahr, approached the police and reported that her minor daughter, Radhika, had gone missing. She suspected that an unknown person had lured the girl away on the pretext of marriage.

Based on her complaint, Nawanshahr City Police registered a case and launched an investigation to trace the teenager.

According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Tushar Gupta, investigators identified Gurvinder Singh alias Gurpreet alias Gopa, a resident of Jadla village, as a suspect during the probe.

The police detained the accused and questioned him regarding the girl's disappearance. During interrogation, he allegedly confessed to killing the teenager at her rented residence on May 29 when she was alone at home.

Investigators said the accused allegedly strangled the girl before placing her body inside a suitcase. He then transported the suitcase on a motorcycle to a forested area near Khuralgarh in Hoshiarpur district, where he allegedly set the body on fire in an attempt to hide the crime.

Acting on the accused's disclosure, police teams, accompanied by forensic experts, searched the identified location and recovered charred human remains believed to be those of the victim.

The remains have been sent for post-mortem examination and forensic analysis. The police said further investigation is underway.

During questioning, the accused allegedly revealed that he was in a relationship with the victim's mother and frequently visited her home. According to the police, the teenager reportedly disapproved of the relationship, which led to tension between her and the accused.

Investigators believe this resentment may have been the motive behind the crime.

The accused was produced before a local court, which granted police four days' remand for further questioning.
