Punjab woman alleges ex-husband sold her 16-day-old son for Rs 5 lakh; police launch investigation

PTC Web Desk: In a bizarre incident that has come to light from Jalandhar in Punjab, a woman has alleged that her former husband, Shiva, has sold her son for Rs 5 lakh. The police have launched a probe into the allegation.

As per information, the woman, identified as Shivani, alleged that after a dispute with her current husband, she started living at a rented accommodation while she was pregnant. During this period, her former husband, with whom she already has two children, came into her contact, although he also remarried after their divorce.

Shivani alleged that Shiva regained her trust during the final stages of her pregnancy and also helped her through childbirth before allegedly orchestrating the disappearance of the newborn.

According to Shivani, she and Shiva were married for nearly 12 years and have two children together. The couple separated around four years ago following marital disputes and later remarried other partners.

She said she had been living separately from her current husband for the past few months due to personal differences. During this period, Shiva allegedly re-established contact with her and regularly visited her residence along with their children.

Shivani told the police that she gave birth to a baby boy at Jalandhar Civil Hospital on May 21. She alleged that her former husband, his present wife and another woman frequently assisted her after delivery, eventually earning her confidence. Four days later, she claimed, a woman arrived at her rented accommodation and informed her that the baby needed to be taken for routine vaccination. Shivani alleged that while she briefly stepped away, the woman left with the infant and never returned. The child has been missing since then.

The woman further alleged that several days after the baby's disappearance, she received a phone call from an unidentified woman claiming to be from Amritsar.

According to the complainant, the caller stated that the child was alive and with her, and allegedly indicated that money had been paid to obtain the baby. Shivani claimed the woman later expressed a desire to return the child in exchange for the amount she had allegedly paid.

She said the call ended abruptly when she attempted to record the conversation and the number has remained unreachable ever since.

Adding to the confusion, Shivani alleged that during her efforts to trace the child, she was told by her former husband's current wife that the newborn had died and been buried.

However, she later heard from local residents that the child may have been sold rather than having died. The woman also claimed that her former husband had recently displayed large amounts of cash on social media and subsequently purchased household items, leading her to suspect a connection with the alleged sale.

The complainant has further accused her former husband of threatening her when she questioned him about the baby's whereabouts. She alleged that he warned her against approaching the police.

Shivani also alleged that her former husband is involved in drug abuse and trafficking. These claims have not been independently verified and remain part of the complaint under investigation.

Following the complaint, the Police Commissioner directed officials at Rama Mandi police station to conduct a detailed inquiry into the matter.

The police have not yet confirmed any of the allegations. Efforts are currently focused on locating the missing infant and establishing the facts of the case.

The whereabouts of the 16-day-old child remain unknown.
