Sukhbir Singh Badal seeks increased financial aid for flood-hit Punjab farmers

Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal has called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi to enhance the financial aid of Rs 1,600 crore announced for Punjab and to consider a one-time loan waiver for farmers affected by recent floods.

Sukhbir Singh Badal also demanded an explanation from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government after a startling revelation during the Prime Minister’s visit. Despite holding Rs 12,000 crore in the Disaster Management Fund, the AAP government reportedly failed to release assistance when it was most needed.

He criticised this inaction as “criminal negligence,” stating that it has exacerbated the hardships faced by the people of Punjab during the flood crisis.

PM announces Rs 1,600 crore relief package for flood-hit Punjab | Details

The Prime Minister has announced an additional financial assistance of Rs 1,600 crore for Punjab, on top of the Rs 12,000 crore already received by the state. The package also includes the advance release of the second installment of the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) and benefits under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi.

The PM emphasised the need for a multi-pronged approach to rebuild the affected regions and support the people.

Key measures include:

Housing Reconstruction: Under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Rural), financial aid will be provided to eligible families for rebuilding flood-damaged houses.

Infrastructure Restoration: Repair of national highways, schools, and other essential structures.

Agriculture Support: Special assistance for farmers, including those without electricity connections. Silted or damaged borewells will be reconstructed under the National Agriculture Development Scheme, in coordination with the state government.

Renewable Energy & Irrigation: Diesel-powered bore pumps will be replaced with solar panels in collaboration with the Ministry of Renewable Energy (MNRE), and micro-irrigation will be promoted under the 'Per Drop More Crop' initiative.

Education: Financial aid for flood-damaged government schools under the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan, pending submission of required details by the state.

Water Conservation: Repair and construction of water conservation structures under the Jal Samukha Jan Partnership programme, promoting rainwater harvesting and long-term water sustainability.

Livelihood & Relief: Distribution of mini kits for animal husbandry and other immediate relief measures under PMNRF.

Farmers say '2023 compensation still pending'

Punjab BJP chief Sunil Jakhar stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a nearly 30-minute meeting with farmers. During the meeting, the farmers informed the PM that they have not yet received compensation for 2023.

Athletes turn rescue heroes, delivering food to homes

In the flood-affected Mand area of Sultanpur Lodhi, a unique scene unfolded today. While families remained stranded in their homes due to the rising waters, Punjab’s first Dragon Boat sportsmen, along with their teams, reached the spot to provide much-needed help.

The coach of these players explained that Dragon Boat racing is not just a sport but can also be used for rescue operations. “Our team is trained in swimming as well as in handling difficult situations in water. That is why we are helping to evacuate people from their homes and taking them to safer locations,” he said.

Riding their Dragon Boats, these athletes are not only delivering food supplies to the flood victims but are also treating this as an opportunity to practice their sport. The team includes world champions, national gold medalists, and national-level champions.

Amritsar DC on flood situation

The Deputy Commissioner of Amritsar, Sakshi Sahni, has informed that 12 points along the Ravi river’s embankment had breached. These gaps are being filled with the support of several Kar Sewa organisations, the Army, and the NDRF. In some areas, the embankment had broken up to 800 feet. She added that if the government had taken up this work alone, it would have taken a long time, and if rains had resumed in Jammu and Kashmir, the situation would have worsened. Volunteers from Moga have also joined the efforts, for which she expressed gratitude.

The DC reported that seven persons lost their lives and 55 cattle perished due to the floods in Amritsar district. A survey is currently underway to assess the extent of damage to homes, with dedicated teams deployed. Sixteen medical teams are visiting villages to provide healthcare, and compensation to the affected people has already begun.

She appealed to NGOs to shift their focus from distributing food to helping victims rebuild their lives and return to normalcy. She added that NGOs may contact the administration to identify who is most in need of relief material.

SAD urges PM Modi for Rs 20,000 crore flood relief package

The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has demanded a comprehensive relief package from the Centre to address the widespread devastation caused by recent floods in Punjab. At a party meeting held to review the situation, SAD leaders expressed concern that external assistance might be limited and pressed the need for urgent intervention.

Party president Sukhbir Singh Badal said, “The Prime Minister is visiting Punjab tomorrow. I appeal to him to announce at least a Rs 20,000 crore package, as people have suffered massive losses.” He further insisted on forming a special monitoring committee, stressing that the SAD had no confidence in the state government.

Badal alleged that the Punjab government already has ₹13,000 crore under disaster management funds, but the amount remains unutilized. He demanded that farmers be compensated at ₹50,000 per acre and recalled that under former CM Parkash Singh Badal, even agricultural labourers received relief. He also sought an increase in compensation for flood victims from ₹4 lakh to ₹10 lakh per deceased person.

Additionally, the SAD proposed ₹1 lakh compensation for loss of livestock, a separate action plan for those whose houses collapsed, and relief for tenant farmers working on leased land. The party also urged the Centre and state government to waive off all loans in the flood-affected regions to provide long-term relief to struggling farmers.

23 districts affected, over 3.8 lakh people impacted, 46 dead

Punjab continues to reel under severe flooding, with 23 districts across the state reporting widespread damage. Areas including Amritsar, Gurdaspur, Ferozepur, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Patiala, and Mohali are among the worst hit.

According to official figures, 1,996 villages are inundated. Amritsar (195), Gurdaspur (329), Hoshiarpur (173), Kapurthala (145), and Barnala (121) account for a large share of the affected villages.

So far, more than 3.87 lakh people have been impacted by the floods. Amritsar (1,36,105), Gurdaspur (1,45,000), and Fazilka (24,930) remain the worst affected districts, while thousands more in Ferozepur, Kapurthala, Moga, Sangrur, and Mohali are also facing hardship.

The death toll has risen to 46 persons across 12 districts. Casualties include Amritsar (7), Hoshiarpur (7), Barnala (5), Pathankot (6), Bathinda (4), Ludhiana (4), Mansa (3), Gurdaspur (2), SAS Nagar (2), Ferozepur (1), Fazilka (1), Rupnagar (1), Patiala (1), and Sangrur (1). Pathankot district has also reported three missing persons. Livestock losses are yet to be fully assessed but are expected to be significant.

Authorities have evacuated 21,854 persons to safer locations, including 3,888 from Ferozepur, 3,260 from Amritsar, 1,616 from Hoshiarpur, 1,428 from Kapurthala, and 1,139 from Pathankot.

Currently, 219 relief camps are operational across the state, sheltering 7,377 displaced residents. These camps are active in Amritsar, Barnala, Bathinda, Fatehgarh Sahib, Jalandhar, Kapurthala, Ludhiana, Moga, Mohali, Pathankot, Patiala, Rupnagar, Sangrur, and SAS Nagar.

Floodwaters have also caused massive damage to agriculture, affecting 1,74,454 hectares of crops. Gurdaspur alone has recorded crop losses across 40,169 hectares, making it the worst-affected district in terms of farming.

Ranjit Sagar Dam Water Level Update

The water level of the Ranjit Sagar Dam reservoir currently stands at around 524.540 metre, while the danger mark is approximately 527 metre.

At present, less water is being released compared to earlier. About 12,200 cusecs of water is flowing directly into the Ravi River through the spillway gates.

In addition, after power generation, nearly 20,000 cusecs of water is also being discharged into the Ravi River.

Bhakra Dam Water Level Update (08-09-25)

The danger mark for the Gobind Sagar reservoir at Bhakra Dam is 1,680 feet. At present, the water level is about 2.60 feet below the danger mark.

All four floodgates of the dam have been opened up to 7 feet each. On Monday, the water level was recorded at 1,677.39 feet.

The current inflow into the dam stands at 55,388 cusecs, while a total of 66,863 cusecs of water is being released through turbines and floodgates.

Flood threat in the Beas river has receded. Water level reduced from 2.5 lakh cusecs to 1,64,566 cusecs. Earlier, the water was touching the danger mark, but now it is flowing close to the yellow alert level.
