Punjab: Sudanese student stabbed to death, other critically injured in Phagwara; 6 held

PTC News Desk: A Sudanese student was brutally killed after he was stabbed and another critically injured following an altercation in Phagwara in the wee hours of Thursday.

The deceased has been identified as Mohammad Wada Bala Yousuf Ahmed who along with his injured brother Ahmed Mohammad Nour Ahmed Hussen were attacked while they were returning from morning nawaz. 

According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Gaurav Toora, all the six accused involved in the brutal killing were tracked down and arrested within five hours of the crime. The incident occurred before 4 am in the Green Valley locality near Law Gate, in Maheru village —a residential hub for international students, especially from African nations.

A case has been registered based on the statement of injured student. He told the police that he and the deceased, Mohammad Wada Bala Yousuf Ahmed, were returning from morning prayers (Nawaz) accompanied by two Sudanese female students when they were stopped by a group of Indian men. The group of men were allegedly under the influence of alcohol. 

When Mohammad Wada and Ahmed intervened to subside the situation, the group of men turned violent and stabbed both of them in the chest. The attackers fled immediately after the assault. 

The police registered a case under Sections 109 (common intention), 103(1) (murder), 190 (voluntarily causing hurt), and 191(3) (attempt to murder) of BNS.

The incident has sent shockwaves across the African student community residing in Phagwara and several students have voiced their concerns owing to the safety in university-adjacent areas.
