Qaumi Insaaf Morcha: SAD(A) chief Simranjeet Singh Mann, his son among 21 booked as agitation on Independence Day turns violent

PTC News Desk: Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) chief Simranjeet Singh Mann and his son Emaan Singh Mann along with 19 others, have been booked by Chandigarh Police adter supporters of Qaumi Insaaf Morcha (QIM) attempted to enter Chandigarh forcefully defying prohibitory orders. 


According to police sources, protesters attacked policemen and tried to breach multiple layers of barricades during the march towards Punjab Lok Bhawan.


A case was registered at Police Station North on the complaint of ASI Varinder Singh under Sections 217, 223, 353(1)(b) and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 9 of the Punjab Security of State Act, 1953, police sources said.

Mann allegedly tried to bypass security by disguising himself as a patient. With his head wrapped in bandages, he reportedly sat inside an ambulance in an attempt to cross the security cordon near Punjab Lok Bhawan in Sector 6. He was taken into custody along with three others — Dpinder Partap Singh, Gopal Singh and Gurpreet Singh.


Police had put up strict, multi-layer security at the Chandigarh-Mohali border to stop the QIM march from reaching Punjab Lok Bhawan. Anti-riot vehicles, water cannons and Rapid Action Force personnel were also deployed.


The morcha has been protesting for the release of Sikh prisoners, including Jagtar Singh Hawara, and has called for a Punjab Bandh on August 21.
