PTC News Desk: The Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee will organise a gurmat samagam on September 6 at Sri Akal Takht Sahib to commemorate martyrdom anniversary of Sikh human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra.

Sri Akal Takht Sahib acting Jathedar Kuldip Singh Gargaj said that the SGPC would begin Akhand Path Sahib at Sri Akal Takht Sahib on September 4 in memory of Jaswant Singh Khalra. The bhog (concluding ceremony) marking its completion would be held on September 6, followed by a gurmat samagam.

He said Jaswant Singh Khalra was a human rights activist who worked to help identify the families of youths who were killed during the period of state repression in Punjab.

Keeping his contribution in mind, a commemorative event will be held at Akal Takht Sahib this year in his memory. Jathedar Giani Kuldip Singh Gargaj appealed to Sikh organisations and the sangat to attend the event in large numbers.

He also announced that a memorial event for Bhai Jaswant Singh Khalra will be held at Akal Takht Sahib every year on September 6.

He said efforts were also underway to identify suitable land in Harike for the proposed Shaheedi Pattan Memorial. The memorial will honour Jaswant Singh Khalra as well as thousands of other martyrs of Punjab.

According to him, work on the proposed memorial is expected to begin soon.
