In a generational shift at the top in the Congress, Rahul Gandhi is all set to take over as party president on Monday as the final announcement is to be made around 3 pm.

The 47-year-old Gandhi will be the sixth Nehru-Gandhi scion to helm the party. His mother and incumbent party president Sonia Gandhi had signed the first nomination paper for the election of her son. Had there been any contest, today (December 11) would have been the last date for withdrawal. Since there was no other nomination, Rahul will be declared elected today.

The Prime Minister Narendra Modi had also said that the Congress leaders admit that it is not a party but a "kunba" (family).

Gandhi, who became the Congress Vice President in January 2013, will succeed his mother Sonia, the longest-serving Congress chief who has helmed the party since 1998.

He is the sixth in the Gandhi-Nehru family to head the party after his great great grandfather Motilal Nehru, great-grandfather Jawaharlal Nehru, grandmother Indira Gandhi and father Rajiv Gandhi.
