SIT can start probe with just two members in 1984 anti-Sikh riots case

The Supreme Court today allowed a two-member Special Investigating Team to investigate further 186 cases related to the 1984 anti- Sikh riots. SIT headed by former Delhi High Court Judge SN Dhingra was was awaiting its third member.

Supreme Court

On Monday, the Supreme Court was told that SIT can start probe with just two members. It may not be necessary to find a replacement for retired IPS officer Rajdeep Singh. He was to be a part of the SIT along with Justice Dhingra and IPS officer, Abhishek Dular. He refused to take up the assignment for personal reasons.

Special Investigation Team

Additional Solicitor General Pinky Anand told a Bench of Justice Madan B Lokur and Justice Deepak Gupta that the government had no objection if Justice Dhingra and Dular continued with their work without waiting for the appointment of the third SIT member.

Senior advocates RS Suri and HS Phoolka agreed to the decision and said that appointing a third member in the SIT might delay the process.
