Arvind Kejriwal eating high-sugar foods daily to intentionally raise his blood sugar levels: ED

New Delhi, April 18: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) informed the court on Thursday that Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, a diabetic, has been allegedly consuming high-sugar foods daily to intentionally raise his blood sugar levels and create grounds for medical bail. The court was hearing Arvind Kejriwal's plea for medical consultation while he is in custody in connection with the Delhi excise policy case.

The court requested the Tihar Jail authorities to provide a report on Arvind Kejriwal's diet. It also asked Kejriwal's lawyer to submit details of the diet prescribed to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader, who suffers from type 2 diabetes.

The ED's counsel claimed Kejriwal, who is permitted to have home-cooked meals, was consuming foods with high sugar content, including tea with sugar, bananas, sweets, and aloo puri, despite knowing these items can elevate blood sugar levels. The ED argued that Kejriwal was doing this to create a medical emergency and gain sympathetic treatment from the court for bail on medical grounds.

The ED added that doctors were available in jail around the clock, and Kejriwal's blood sugar levels were being monitored twice daily. According to the ED, Kejriwal's blood sugar level was recorded at 139 mg/dl on April 1, the day he was brought to Tihar Jail, and it rose to 276 mg/dl on April 14.

Kejriwal's lawyer challenged the ED's claims, questioning the consumption of such foods by someone with diabetes. The court requested a list of Kejriwal's prescribed diet to compare with the food he was eating in jail. The hearing will continue on Friday.
