Sugarcane farmers end stir after assurance from administration

Sugarcane growers lifted their 33-hour blockade from the highway, on Wednesday, after officials gave them in writing that they had accepted their demands, which included release of pending Rs 450-crore payments from last year.

In the past 30 hours, the administration held several rounds of talks with farmer leaders, but it failed to convince them.

Later in the evening, after a 4-hour long meeting with the Deputy Commissioner, farmer leaders agreed to remove the blockade after Punjab government accepted their demands.

It was decided that State Government would pay Rs.25 per quintal on sugarcane to the farmers directly out of the State Assured Price (SAP) of Rs.310 per quintal, while the remaining Rs.285 per quintal would be paid to them by the private sugar mills.
