Imphal protests turn violent: Deputy Commissioner's office vandalised, two vehicles set ablaze

Imphal, September 28: Violent protests have gripped Imphal, Manipur, following the tragic deaths of two youths, with the unrest continuing into the early hours of Thursday. In a disturbing turn of events, a mob targeted and vandalised the deputy commissioner's office in Imphal west, along with setting fire to two four-wheelers, according to officials.
The latest wave of violence, primarily led by students, erupted in the state capital after images of two youths who had gone missing in July circulated widely on social media.
On Wednesday night, protesters clashed with security personnel in various areas, including Uripok, Yaiskul, Sagolband, and Tera, prompting law enforcement forces to resort to multiple rounds of teargas shells to regain control of the situation, as reported by officials. To obstruct the security forces from entering residential neighbourhoods, protesters barricaded roads with burning tires, boulders, and iron pipes.

Furthermore, a group of demonstrators targeted the deputy commissioner's office, causing extensive damage, and set ablaze two four-wheelers. The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel intervened to restore order.
As a result of the violent protests that have been ongoing since Tuesday, with 65 demonstrators sustaining injuries, curfew has been reimposed in Imphal East and West districts. In another concerning incident, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) office located in Khongjam, Thoubal district, was set on fire, according to police reports.

A statement from the Manipur Police highlighted that a mob had attacked a police vehicle, setting it on fire while assaulting a policeman and disarming him of his weapon. The statement further emphasized that strict actions would be taken against those involved in such criminal activities. A search operation was initiated to recover the stolen arms and detain the individuals responsible for the attack.
