SC supports Centre's arguments: No doubt on Cheetah deaths

New Delhi, August 07: The Supreme Court provided significant relief to the government by expressing confidence in its efforts to reintroduce cheetahs in India. The court made this statement in response to a petition regarding the death of nine cheetahs, including three cubs, in the Kuno National Park this year.

In September of the previous year, the national park witnessed the reintroduction of 20 adult cheetahs brought from Namibia and South Africa, and four cubs were subsequently born there. This reintroduction project aimed to revive the cheetah population in India after the species was declared extinct in the country in 1952.

According to the government, this is the first year following the translocation of cheetahs from Namibia in September 2022 and from South Africa in February this year. Continuous efforts are being made to adapt to weather conditions and their effects on the cheetahs.

The government assured the court that substantial preparation is in progress, and they plan to introduce 12-14 new cheetahs each year. While acknowledging some challenges, the government stated that there is nothing alarming about the situation.
