After India, US now looking to ban Chinese social media apps, including TikTok

Days after India banned 59 Chinese apps, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has said that the United States is "certainly looking at" banning Chinese social media apps, including TikTok.

During an interview with Fox News, Pompeo said that "I don't want to get out in front of the President (Donald Trump), but it's something we're looking at."

The US lawmakers have expressed security concerns over how TikTok handles users’ data. He said that as per the Chinese laws, domestic companies should "support and cooperate with intelligence work controlled by the Chinese Communist Party".

TikTok, a musical app owned by China-based ByteDance, is not available in China. Pompeo's remarks came amid tensions between the US and China over the way Beijing handled the COVID-19 outbreak.

Last week, Mike Pompeo welcomed India's decision of banning 59 Chinese apps. He said that "We welcome India's ban on certain mobile apps that can serve as appendages of the CCP's surveillance state. India's 'clean app' approach will boost India's sovereignty, will also boost India's integrity and national security as the Indian government itself has stated."
