Uttarakhand Elections 2022: Rebel candidates of BJP, Congress withdraw nominations

Uttarakhand Assembly Elections 2022: As many as 95 rebels from both Bharatiya Janata Party and Congress withdrew their nomination on Monday after senior party leaders managed to persuade them to support the party's official candidates ahead of assembly polls in the state, said sources.

According to Joint Chief Electoral Officer Pratap Singh Shah, around 95 candidates from 70 assembly seats withdrew their names on Monday, the last date for withdrawing nominations. "A total of 632 candidates will contest the election on 70 assembly seats in Uttarakhand," Shah added.

In the upcoming assembly elections in Uttarakhand, a maximum number of 117 candidates are contesting polls from Dehradun district while the lowest number is from Champawat and Bageshwar seat where 14 candidates each will be contesting.

BJP candidate Vinod Chamoli will continue to face a challenge from rebel Birsingh Panwar from Dehradun's Dharampur assembly in the elections.

The election for the 70-member Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly is scheduled for February 14. The results of the election will be announced on March 10.

Meanwhile, the Election Commission of India has extended the ban on political rallies and roadshows till February 11 in five poll-bound states of Uttarakhand, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Goa and Manipur.

However, the Election Commission has permitted the physical rallies with a maximum capacity of 1,000 persons and indoor meetings will be allowed with a maximum capacity of 500 persons. Twenty persons have been allowed for door-to-door campaign.

Chief Election Commissioner Sushil Chandra along with Election Commissioners Rajiv Kumar and Anup Chandra Pandey on Monday held another comprehensive review of the present situation of Covid 19 infection, particularly in the states of Goa, Manipur, Punjab, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh where the Assembly elections are nearing.
