Amid protests, Canadian PM Justin Trudeau tests positive for Covid-19

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Monday announced that he had tested positive for Covid-19 and stated he was "feeling fine" and will work remotely this week while adhering to public health guidelines. Trudeau also encouraged people to get "vaccinated and boosted" on Twitter, writing: “This morning, I tested positive for Covid-19. I’m feeling fine – and I’ll continue to work remotely this week while following public health guidelines." On Thursday, Trudeau had announced that he will remain in isolation for five days after knowing the evening before that he had been in contact with someone who had tested positive. Trudeau was already quarantined at home during the pandemic's early months after his wife tested positive. Some protesters travelled in truck convoys and blocked traffic on the streets surrounding Parliament Hill. Notably, Canada has one of the highest rates of coronavirus vaccination in the world, with doses intended to keep individuals who become infected from becoming critically ill. After a large-scale protest against Covid-19 vaccine mandates converged on Parliament Hill on Saturday, media reports suggested that Trudeau and his family had left their house in the capital Ottawa and relocated to a secret location. The 'Freedom Convoy,' which began as a protest against a vaccine mandate for cross-border truckers, turned into a major protest against the Trudeau government's coronavirus restrictions. According to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, tens of thousands of truckers and other protesters gathered in Ottawa on Saturday to demand an end to Covid-19 vaccine mandates and other public health restrictions. Some of the demonstrators were seen dancing on the iconic war memorial, causing Canadian Defense Minister Anita Anand and Canada's top soldier, Gen. Wayne Eyre, to denounce the actions.
