Indian youth dies in New York fire; people seen 'jumping out of windows' in panic

New York fire: A 27-year-old Indian national died in a horrific fire in Harlem, New York.

The deceased was identified as Fazil Khan. The Indian Embassy in New York expressed support and stated that it is in contact with Khan's friends and family.

"Saddened to learn about death of 27-year-old Indian national Mr Fazil Khan in an unfortunate fire incident in Harlem, NY. India in New York is in touch with the late Mr Fazil Khan's family & friends. We continue to extend all possible assistance in reparation of his mortal remains to India," the Indian Embassy in New York said.

According to the Fire Department of New York (FDNY), a lithium-ion battery started a tragic fire in a Harlem apartment building on Friday, as reported by CBS News.

According to reports, 17 people suffered injuries while scores were displaced.

Furthermore, the rampaging fire prompted dramatic and rare rope rescues.

Angie Ratchford, a neighbour, stated, "People were coming out of the building. The fire is at the top. You can see the police coming down with the people, and people are jumping out the window.

"Just what I have on me. My phone, my keys and this guy," Akil Jones, a resident who escaped the fire with his father stated.

To save their lives, the residents of the St. Nicholas Place apartment block had to jump or use the fire escape.

Meanwhile, fire officials say 18 people were rescued. Furthermore, CBS News reported that 12 people were rushed to a local hospital, with four still in critical condition.
