Who was Chandranath Rath: Ex-IAF officer and Suvendu Adhikari's aide shot dead near Kolkata
PTC News Desk: Post-election tensions in West Bengal intensified after Chandranath Rath, a close aide and personal assistant of BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, was shot dead in what is being seen as a targeted attack. Calling the incident a “planned murder” and a “personal loss,” Adhikari urged BJP supporters to remain calm and maintain peace.
Rath, who had worked with Adhikari for many years, was attacked on Wednesday night in Madhyamgram area of North 24 Parganas district. He sustained multiple bullet injuries and was taken to a private hospital, where doctors later declared him dead. Describing the incident as a “tragic killing,” Adhikari said the police had promised strict action in the matter.
A lot of incidents have happened in nearby areas. Police are investigating the entire case. It’s a pre-planned murder. It's a personal loss for me," Adhikari told reporters after the incident.
"I appeal to all BJP workers to maintain peace. It's a painful murder. Police have assured us of proper actions in the case," he added.
Who was Chandranath Rath ?
Chandranath Rath may not have been a well-known public figure in Bengal politics, but within BJP circles he was regarded as one of the most trusted associates of BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari. The 41-year-old, who was shot dead in North 24 Parganas on Wednesday night, had an unusual journey — from serving in the Indian Air Force to becoming an important behind-the-scenes figure in Bengal’s opposition politics.
Originally from Chandipur in Purba Medinipur, Rath shared long-standing political and personal ties with Adhikari. People close to him described him as calm, disciplined and strongly influenced by the teachings of the Ramakrishna Mission, where he studied during his childhood. Friends said he had once thought about leading a spiritual life before eventually joining the Air Force, where he served for nearly 20 years.
Within the BJP, Rath was known for handling sensitive political work, managing campaign operations and coordinating with party workers. He also played a key role in several major election campaigns, including the BJP’s high-profile Bhabanipur contest. Party insiders said he enjoyed Adhikari’s full trust and was increasingly emerging as an important organisational figure in the camp.
On Wednesday night, Rath’s political journey ended tragically when unidentified attackers on motorcycles allegedly stopped his vehicle near the Doharia area of Madhyamgram and opened fire at close range. His killing has further escalated political tensions in West Bengal and sparked fresh allegations amid the already charged post-election atmosphere.
