New Delhi, July 12: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to undertake a significant visit to France this week, where he will be the guest of honor at the Bastille Day celebrations on Friday, commemorating France's Independence Day and the historic French Revolution. This visit is expected to highlight a major defense acquisition agreement and an extensive bilateral engagement.

During a reception led by President Emmanuel Macron, PM Modi will meet the entire political leadership of France, including the French Prime Minister and the Presidents of the Senate and the National Assembly. Trade and economy will be a key focus, with a CEO forum scheduled to facilitate discussions between business leaders from both countries.

India, a significant customer for French defense equipment, including the Rafale fighter jets from Dassault, is likely to expand its defense procurement from France during this visit.

Reports suggest that PM Modi may announce the purchase of an additional 26 Rafale jets for deployment on the INS Vikrant aircraft carrier. Additionally, India's naval capabilities will be bolstered by the acquisition of three Scorpene-class submarines, built in collaboration with France.

The strengthening of defense assets aims to modernize India's armed forces in anticipation of potential future challenges, particularly from neighboring China. PM Modi's discussions with President Macron are expected to delve into the details of India's defense cooperation with France.

Beyond economic and strategic interests, PM Modi's visit coincides with the 25th anniversary of the India-France Strategic Partnership, adding further significance. In a rare honor, an Indian military contingent comprising all three services will participate in the Bastille Day celebrations, which holds a special place in the French consciousness, commemorating the historic storming of the Bastille prison during the French Revolution in 1789.

PM Modi's itinerary is set to leverage his warm personal rapport with President Macron, as they will engage in multiple meetings, including a private dinner, a joint meeting with CEOs, and a state banquet at the iconic Louvre Museum on Bastille Day. The visit will also provide an opportunity for PM Modi to connect with the Indian community in France.

Following PM Modi's recent state visit to the White House, his trip to France signifies a deepening engagement between India and Western powers.
