Punjabi family deported from Canada after eights years, asylum claim, humanitarian grounds rejected

PTC News Desk: The Canadian authorities have deported a Punjabi family and rejected their asylum claim and subsequent request to remain in the country on humanitarian and compassionate grounds. The family, originally from Punjab's Jalandhar and residing in Quebec, had spent nearly eight years in Canada, where the parents worked, paid taxes and raised their two children.
Why did family seek asylum in Canada ?
Harish travelled to Canada on a visitor visa in 2018 and later applied for asylum.
In his application, he said he had operated a grocery store in India and alleged that police, under pressure from a political leader, had harassed him and filed false cases against him.
He also alleged that he was illegally detained from August 12 to August 19, 2017, during which he claimed he was severely tortured. According to Harish, the experience made him fear for his life and led him to seek protection in Canada.
However, Canadian authorities rejected the family's asylum application and did not accept the alleged threat to Harish's life as sufficient grounds for protection.
An official from the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) said that once a deportation order is issued against an undocumented foreign national and the person is taken into custody, the agency proceeds with their removal from Canada.
The family is among numerous immigration cases involving people facing removal from Canada. Deportations continue in cases where valid removal orders remain in place.
