Bal Gangadhar Tilak Death Anniversary: A Teacher, nationalist and activist Tilak, who was born as Keshav Gangadhar Tilak on July 23, 1856, is known for his contribution in the Indian Freedom struggle. He dedicated all his life to the freedom of the country.   • Bal Gangadhar Tilak was the first leader of the Indian Independence revolution who ended up with the rise of Indian freedom. Also, the Britishers used to call him the ‘Father of the Indian Unrest’.
  • He was entitled Swaraj, being the first Indian to advocate for Swaraj. In fact, it was his quote, “Swaraj is my birthright, and I shall have it!” Also, he was prominently known as ‘Lokmanya’, which means admired by the people.
  • The Revolutionary Bal Gangadhar Tilak joins the hand of Indian National Congress (INC) in 1890 and raised the voice for self-rule. Likewise, he was the first Indian activist to introduce the concept of ‘Swaraj’.
  • Tilak started his own newspaper in 1880, which was given the title- Kesari, which is still published to date.
  • The Government of India also released a coin in remembrance of Bal Gangadhar Tilak on his 150th birth anniversary in 2007.
  • Furthermore, Om Raut directed a film Lokmanya: Ek Yug Purush based on his life, which was released on January 2, 2015.
