India records 18% surge in weekly cyber attacks in Jan-Mar 2023

New Delhi, May 5: India witnessed an 18 percent increase year-on-year in weekly cyberattacks during the first quarter of calendar year (CY) 2023, according to a report. According to the research, there were an average of 2,108 attacks per organisation over the period.

Check Point said in a statement that the global average weekly attacks increased by 7% compared to the same period in 2022, with each company experiencing an average of 1,248 attacks per week. According to the data, the education or research sector was hit the hardest with the biggest number of attacks during the first quarter of 2023, averaging 2,507 attacks per organisation each week, marking a 15% increase from Q1 2022.


With an average of 1,725 attacks per week, the government or military sector was the second most targeted, representing a 3% rise over the previous year.

The healthcare sector saw a large increase in attacks, with an average of 1,684 attacks each week, a 22 percent increase year on year. However, the most notable rise was in the retail or wholesale sector, which experienced a 49 percent year-over-year increase with an average of 1,079 attacks each week.

According to the report, education or research remained the most badly impacted industry, with many institutions still failing to secure extended networks and access points as the shift to remote learning progressed.

African region had the highest number of average weekly cyberattacks per organisation in the first quarter of 2023, with an average of 1,983 attacks, representing a 2% drop from Q1 2022.

The APAC region, on the other hand, saw the most significant year-over-year increase in average weekly attacks per organisation, with a surge of 16%, reaching an average of 1,835 attacks per organisation, followed by the North American region, which saw a 9% year-on-year increase, reaching 950 average weekly attacks per organisation, according to the Check Point report.
